Good, Better,Best Brew

Isn’t it crazy how many methods are available for making one cup of coffee?? You can spend very little on equipment or you can invest in a really superior machine that crafts an assortment of drinks. I’ve listed some of the ones that we have used over the years. Lots of price options as well as feature options. Click the Method for shopping links.

French Press The French Press method, invented in 1929, is widely considered as the best and easiest method for brewing superior and consistent coffee. It extracts, arguably, more superior flavours than any other method. In a press pot, ground coffee is soaked, steeped and strained in hot water; therefore, coffee’s flavourful essential oils, caffeine and antioxidants are better diffused and preserved leaving the purest flavours of the coffee. It is well suited for coffee drinkers that enjoy a luscious, expressive and complex taste experience.

Pour Over One of the oldest, simplest, fastest and cheapest ways to brew coffee is the drip method using a coffee cone and paper filter. Hot water is poured evenly over coffee grounds in a paper filter. With gravity, the brewed coffee drips slowly and directly into a cup or pot. Coffee cones are made of plastic, glass, stainless steel or ceramic. The shape of the cone and their filters will influence the flavours. If you want the flavor of pour over in a machine form then check out Moccamaster which does the work for you. An exceptional cup of coffee!

ChemEx Chemex is a beautifully designed and elegant pour over, glass flask that was invented in 1941 by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. It uses a special Chemex paper filter that is 20-30% heavier than other filters. Similar to the coffee cone, hot water is poured over coffee grounds in a paper filter. The brewed coffee drips into the bottom of the flask which doubles as its own carafe.

Cold Brew is made by steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for many hours. It can be made in cold brew makers fitted with a mesh or filtered compartment for grounds, or in a large container where grounds mix freely with water before being strained out. Unlike brewed coffee made more quickly with boiling water, coffee grounds slowly release their flavors and essential oils over 12 to 24 hours.

Traditional Drip is the most popular method of brewing coffee. Obviously there are so many machines out there but I wouldn’t go super cheap as they are not made to last.

Espresso was invented in Italy, around 100 years ago, and is credited to a man by the name of Luigi Bezzera, from Milan. He was the first to use a steam-pressure method of brewing coffee, which produced a strong cup of coffee faster than ever before.

Jura is the machine we currently use daily. I saved up and invested to purchase this and besides making 17 specialty drinks, the regular cup of coffee is equally amazing. We have saved so much money not going to Starbucks (which was a daily habit for my hubby) and I get to use the beans of my choice. Ground fresh for every cup- you cannot beat the taste. You can also customize the strength and favorite drinks for each person in your family. It truly is next level and we have no regrets!

Hope this helps you when deciding on your next purchase. Enjoy!
